Discover the Underwater Skyscraper: A Coral Reef That Outshines Central Park Tower!
If you were reading about, ahem, other scientific findings in 2020 you might have missed this incredible headline: Scientists discovered a detached coral reef from the Great Barrier Reef and it is taller than the 1,550 ft. Central Park Tower.
OMG!
It resides just off Cape York on the Great Barrier Reef, where Aussie scientists stumbled upon the reef, which has a base that's 1.5km wide and is only 40m below the surface. This is the first detached reef found in over 120 years.
They've been mapping the seabed from the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor, and found this reef, which adds to the seven other tall detached reefs in the area. The expedition leader, Dr. Rob Beaman, was totally surprised and stoked about the discovery. They even sent an underwater robot, SuBastian, to explore and live-stream the reef.
The Schmidt Ocean Institute has been on a roll, with underwater discoveries like deep-sea coral gardens and graveyards in Bremer Canyon Marine Park, the longest recorded sea creature (a 45m siphonophore), and up to 30 new species. They also found five undescribed species of black coral and sponges, plus rare scorpionfish in the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks. Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute, said there's still so much we don't know about our oceans.
New technologies are helping us explore like never before, and there are so many unknown structures and species out there. Who knows... maybe we'll even find Atlantis down there!
Ah, in the meantime, maybe we'll just play Deep Sea Treasures over in our online slots lobby...
